NEDWeb to Global Address List (GAL) Data Flow

Effective July 9, 2006, name, contact, and locator information in the NIH Enterprise Directory (NED) will be propagated to the NIH Global Address List (GAL) by Constellation.  After this date, NIH staff will no longer be able to change this information directly in the GAL.  Instead, updates will be made in NED and changes will automatically flow to the GAL.

Information contained in your NED record is generally obtained from the following sources:

  1. Administrative Officers (AOs) or other administrative staff using the NEDWeb AO/AT Web interface.

  2. Individual record owners using NEDWeb self-service update (accessible by clicking the "Update your information" link on the public NED Web site).

  3. An external "authoritative source" (e.g. NIH payroll systems).

Much of the information that will be flowed from NED to the GAL by Constellation can be updated by individual record owners using NED self-service update.  In the case of people with NED records linked to an external authoritative source (e.g. NIH employees in the Human Resources Database,  Visiting Fellows in the Fellowship Payment System), name changes need to be made in the authoritative source.  Changes will then flow from the authoritative source to NED and the GAL.

The following table summarizes the mapping of NEDWeb fields to the GAL and the method by which the NEDWeb field can be updated.  For example, if building is changed by an individual record owner as a self-service update or by an AO, the following fields will be updated in the GAL: Address, Building/Room, City, State, Zip Code.

Notes:

  1. A preferred name in NED is optional.  If a person has a preferred first and/or last name, it will be flowed to the GAL instead of "legal" first and/or last name.

  2. Name changes (preferred or "legal") in NED will not affect a person's Display Name in the GAL.  Requests to change your GAL display name must be submitted via the NIH Help Desk (301-496-HELP).

  3. Not all NED classification changes are flowed by Constellation to the GAL.  Display name consists of three separate components:  name, IC, and employee type.  A change in NED classification will flow to the GAL only if name and IC remain the same (i.e., do not change as part of the NED update that changes the classification).  Please contact the NIH Help Desk to request a manual change to your GAL display name.
